Biofeedback

Many women with weakness cannot feel anything happening as they try to contract their pelvic floor. This is very common and not surprising when one considers that these are "hidden" muscles. It is always easier to see something working than not. Biofeedback techniques are useful because they immediately "feedback" information to us about what is happening. They are useful in getting a squeeze and lift going when the ability to do so has long been forgotten and they help to motivate and encourage. There are several biofeedback techniques available and any of them can be used to assess the strength and endurance of a contraction and to motivate and encourage at all stages of a treatment programme both in the clinic setting and at home.

The technique used at Pinner Road Physiotherapy is real-time ultrasound scanning. A moving image is taken and the effect of a pelvic floor squeeze and lift on the bladder can easily be seen. In this way it is both easy to determine if a squeeze and lift is being performed correctly and how the technique may be improved if necessary
